About the data

What the numbers mean

01

Edition + publication

Each entry uses one representative cataloged edition. Established shelves retain their verified ISBNs; new award titles resolve a real ISBN from Google Books or Open Library after loading. Cover artwork comes from catalog cover IDs, alternate editions, or matching Wikipedia book articles. Series use a first volume or standard omnibus. “First published” records the work’s original year and determines era filters; custom ranges include both selected years.

02

Reader rating

Each score combines available Google Books, Open Library, and Hardcover community ratings. Searches check alternate editions, subtitle variants, and each named author; Google contributes the matching edition with the largest review count. Each source is weighted by its rating count. Full-library updates save a shared snapshot for all visitors. The owner can refresh on demand or choose a 30-day refresh that starts on the next owner visit. Counts describe submissions, not verified unique readers.

03

Current price

Displayed prices come from verified Google Play Books offers for editions matching the book’s title and author, and are refreshed after 24 hours. A listed offer may represent an ebook rather than the displayed print ISBN. When no verified price is available, direct links search the book’s title and author at Bookshop.org or Google Play Books. Availability and prices vary by retailer, territory, and edition.

04

How books were selected

Essential 35 preserves the original ranked shelves. Expanded 50 applies site-wide and adds up to fifteen eligible books per shelf; search, publication filters, reader ratings, totals, and the Scrying Orb all follow the same setting. The Popular Mechanics source remains at 35, while award shelves stop below 50 whenever the verified archive or stricter criteria support fewer eligible books. Editorial canons balance influence, critical stature, cultural range, reader regard, and historical reach.

05

How list rank works

Rank expresses an editorial judgment within each collection. Higher positions reflect the strongest combined case for influence, critical stature, originality, endurance, and fit. Award-list rank is not an official lifetime ranking by the prize organization, and crossover ranks are not determined by award count alone. The Original 35 retains its source order.

06

Sorting conventions

Author order uses the primary author’s family name. Ascending means rank 1–35 in Essential mode or up to 1–50 in Expanded mode, title and author A–Z, price low–high, publication and award year newest–oldest, and reader rating or awards won highest–lowest. Rating + reader count applies a confidence-weighted score: strong ratings backed by larger reader pools outrank isolated high scores. Descending reverses the chosen order. Library size, sort, and era selections persist when you change collections.

07

Award records + status

Award shelves draw on official prize archives. Winner indicates the honored book; Finalist marks an officially shortlisted or nominated work. Crossover cards identify dual winners, winner-plus-finalist pairs, or the number of verified prizes. The Nobel honors the author’s body of work, so its cards say Laureate and show one representative book.

08

Award year

The award year records when the prize was presented or announced, which can differ from a book’s first publication year or the organization’s eligibility year. Co-winners remain winners. Crossover cards show their most recent listed honor, with individual prize years beneath multiple awards.

09

Cross-award distinctions

Most Awarded counts distinct verified book-level wins; finalist places and Nobel career honors do not increase that total. Hugo + Nebula includes all 26 novels that won both prizes and nine books that won one while reaching finalist status for the other. Every distinction is labeled.

10

Finalists + world literature

A Great Finalist did not win the specific prize shown on its card, but may have won another honor. Justice and Human Dignity focuses on inequality, freedom, labor, solidarity, and community. International Prizewinning Fiction spans borders and languages and identifies Nobel selections as author laureates.
